  • Session Description: This interactive training explores the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), evidence-based resilience factors, and resilience-based communication tools that adults can use to support positive youth development. (These tools can be used as you interact with both youth and adults)! Adolescence typically refers to the period of life between childhood and adulthood. While the exact age range can vary, it is generally considered to be from ages 10 to 19. This period is marked by significant physical, emotional, and psychological changes as individuals transition from childhood to adulthood. However, some definitions stretch this range to include young adulthood up to age 25, especially in terms of brain development and the continued maturation of social and emotional skills.

Learning Objectives: In this presentation, learners will:
    1. Understand the link between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and adolescent development, as well as how they affect behavioral and health outcomes.
    2. Explore trauma responsive and evidence-based resilience factors and resilience-based communication tools that will help them support adolescents.M
    3. Increase their knowledge about local, state, and national resources for adolescents and care providers.

Speaker Bio: With over 30 years of nursing experience, Denise has had the privilege of caring for patients across a wide range of settings, including public health, home care, clinics, acute care, physical rehabilitation, and long-term care. Her career in public health spans work at the county, state, and federal levels, with her first and most cherished public health position at the Ross County District. After 27 years—and moves to Texas, Washington State, and back to Ohio—Denise is thrilled to return to the Ross County Health District as a Public Health Nurse 3. In addition to her nursing career, Denise is the owner and instructor at Explorer Yoga in Chillicothe, founded in 2016. Her husband, Bret, an archaeologist with the National Park Service, recently retired after playing a key role in helping Hopewell Culture National Historic Park achieve World Heritage status. Together, they enjoy traveling to other World Heritage sites, exploring the history and culture that make these places so significant. Outside of work, Denise is an avid nature enthusiast and enjoys gardening, hiking, bicycling, fishing, camping, and all things that connect her to the great outdoors.
